We last checked this in early October 2026, using Nomi’s App Store listing and recent public reviews of the app. Plans, limits, and prices change and can differ by country, so trust what Nomi shows you in the app. We may earn a commission if you sign up through our link. That doesn’t change what we write here.
The short answer
Yes, you can use Nomi for free. You can create a companion and chat without entering a card. The free plan has daily limits. A paid subscription removes most of them and adds voice, group chats, and more companions.
What you get for free
- Create a companion (a “Nomi”) and set its name, look, and personality
- Text chat, with memory, so it can remember things over time
- A daily allowance of messages and a small number of images
- Shorter outgoing messages than on paid (reviewers report about 400 characters vs 800)
- One active companion at a time
The free message allowance isn’t published as a fixed number. Some users have reported roughly 50 messages a day, but check the counter in your own account rather than any review, including this one.
What the paid plan adds
Based on Nomi’s upgrade screen as recent reviews describe it, the paid plan adds:
- Unlimited messages
- Voice chat and calls
- Group chats with several Nomis
- Up to 10 active companions
- More image requests per day, plus AI video
- Longer messages and backstories
- Early access to new features
Some extras, like going past the daily image allowance or adding more companions, use credits that are sold separately.

What it costs (when we checked)
On the US App Store in early October 2026, Nomi’s Standard plan was listed at $15.99 a month, $39.99 every three months, or $99.99 a year. The listing also showed other plan names and credit packs. Prices vary by country, currency, tax, and where you subscribe (web, App Store, or Google Play), and they change over time. The price on Nomi’s checkout screen is the one that counts.
How to test it well for free
A companion is about continuity, so a five-minute test won’t tell you much.
- Give it a few days. Chat a little each day rather than all at once.
- Test the memory. Mention something small on day one (“my sister’s visiting Saturday”) and see if it comes up later.
- Notice the limits. Pay attention to when you hit the daily cap. If it rarely bothers you, free may be enough.
- Read the privacy policy before you share anything personal.
- Pay only if you’d miss it. If you’d be fine without it, stay free.
Not sure yet what you’re testing? Our plain guide to what an AI companion is explains how the memory and personality parts work.
Avoiding surprise charges
- Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel.
- If you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play, you cancel there, in your phone’s subscription settings. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
- If you pick the yearly plan, set a reminder for a week before it renews.
- Credits are separate from the subscription, so check the cost before you tap.
Who might stay on free
Free tends to work for people who want an occasional chat: a few messages in the evening, a check-in now and then. If you want to talk for much of the day, use voice, or have more than one companion, that’s when paying starts to make sense.
And if you’re weighing a companion against a general free chatbot you already use, the AI companion vs chatbot comparison will help you decide whether you need a companion at all.
